NOTES

This CD combines Sonny Boy Williamson's first (1951) recordings and his last (1965) when the photo on the cover was taken. Sonny Boy would die soon after the KFFA King Biscuit Time recordings, which are the only surviving recordings of the show with Sonny Boy Williamson live. Tracks 1-16 were originally recorded by Lillian McMurry of Trumpet Records and released as 78 and 45 r.p.m. records. The represent the best of Sonny Boy's Trumpet Recordings. They were later remastered by Chris Strachwitz, who had purchased the masters. Track 17 was recorded during a radio broadcast in 1965, shortly before Sonny Boy's death. This album was first released in 1966 as Blues Classics, Vol. 9 (BC 9), without tracks 17 and 18, then reissued around 1970 (A-2020). The current CD version dates from 1989. The addition of "Dust My Broom" by Elmo James with Sonny Boy on harp alone makes this a classic recording. Paul Oliver wrote the liner notes.
